Austrian director Fritz Lang created some of the most influential and awe-inspiring cult films of the 20th century (Metropolis, Woman in the Moon). But his final film, Die Tausend Augen des Dr. Mabuse (1,000 Eyes of Dr. Mabuse), often slips under enthusiasts' radar: Its brief US theater run in 1960 was saddled with badly dubbed English. The film's new release, on digitally remastered video with subtitles, marks its American debut in the original German-language version.

Known for complex plots and high tech espionage, Lang's many Dr. Mabuse films are James Bond and Indiana Jones precursors. In this installment, the evil doctor, a master of disguises, continues his deranged crime wave by brainwashing an American nuclear arms manufacturer. Bewildered police are always one step behind.

1,000 Eyes of Dr. Mabuse : $24.95. Kino on Video: +1 (800) 562 3330, www.kino.com.
