Unless you've swapped your in-line skates for a scooter - and if you have, we hope you're under the age of 9 - you'll want to check out the real watershed product for wireless communication: Microsport's In-Line Skate Speedometer wheel.

The German-made speedo is actually an extra skate wheel that measures speed and trip distance and relays the info to a wrist receiver. We found the wheel switch-out easy, despite the poorly translated directions. A digital receiver with readout fits over your protective wristpad via an extra-long Velcro strap.

If you don't mind taking your eyes off the road, the distance and speed feeds can be downright addictive. Our stats: 8.14 mph average speed, 18.95 mph max speed, 8.23 miles total distance, achieved in 1:07, not including stops for two lemonades, one hot dog, one coconut ice cream, two pretzels with mustard. Sick!

Microsport In-Line Skate Speedometer: $85. Microsport: +49 (89) 307 255 99, www.microsport.de.
