HARDWARE

I knew accessing my desktop PC with my laptop would be a challenge. The desktop has no free serial or parallel ports and no slot for an Ethernet card. And though both machines have USB ports, USB is designed for master-slave use, not peer networking. EZ-Link's insta-network fixes that: For $90, you get a USB cable and software that makes it work seamlessly ... almost.

It took some tweaking with my computers' settings before each showed up on the other's radar. A brushup on Microsoft Windows and Network Neighborhood helped, and I enlisted email support from EZ-Link.

After this, though, I could drag and drop files from one computer to the other, even though they were created under different versions of Windows. Installing software to my laptop was a snap - I just accessed my desktop's CD-ROM drive.

Best of all, EZ-Link beats other home Nets with its convenience: You can hook machines up while they're running - handy if you just need to connect and scram.

EZ-Link: $89.95. Anchor Chips: +1 (619) 613 7900, www.ezlinkusb.com.
