Knife-filled bowling pins are the weapons of choice in the Lost Vegas outlands, the last free state in America, where Elvis (who else?) is literally king. It's 40 years postapocalypse and the Soviet army wiped out the United States - almost. King Elvis has died, and the first warrior to reach Vegas will capture his crown. This is the setup in Six-String Samurai, a filmic feast with a Mad Max-meets-Keystone Kops flavor.

Enter a mysterious guitar-and-sword-toting character named Buddy. Making his US debut, Jeffrey Falcon, a Hong Kong action-flick staple, gives Buddy stylish play.

New director Lance Mungia creates a surreal visual and emotional world and decidedly deserves the movie's festival-circuit awards for cinematography and editing.

Never mind its brief stay in local theaters: Six-String Samurai shines gloriously on the smaller screen and will certainly earn its due status there.

Six-String Samurai: $29.95 DVD, $19.95 video. Rykodisc Distribution Partners: (800) 626 1470.
