Sony to Sell Digital Downloads

Sony signs on to start zapping its music to stores and customers digitally over a high-speed, proprietary network. By Chris Oakes.

A large catalog of pop music has shed its plastic prison, and waded, albeit cautiously, into the digital realm.

Sony Music Entertainment said Wednesday that it will distribute its music catalog to stores by way of a high-speed digital network.

"This is the first time a major label has licensed its music for digital distribution. And it's huge -- it's a watershed event," said Scott Smith, president of Digital On-Demand.
