Norman Brosterman finds the future in 19th-century journals and pulp sci-fi magazines. In other words, the New York City writer and art dealer collects a future that never was.

Next year, the Smithsonian will launch a traveling exhibition of this urban paradise of monorails and bubble-top cars, works displaying equal parts talent and optimism.

"I look for the gee-whiz factor," says Brosterman. "I love these artists' naïveté. They're dreaming of something beyond the often squalid average life in the early 20th century."
