The recording industry is racing the clock to settle on a key standard that will determine how consumers will carry, play, and copy music.
The Secure Digital Music Initiative (SDMI) working group has just over a month to lock down the details of a secure digital music format designed to overtake the already wildly popular MP3 format. The specification has to be finalized by June 30 so that manufacturers have enough time to include it in portable players for the coming Christmas season.
