Rio Goes Crypto

Upcoming versions of the Rio MP3 player will have a system for enforcing copyrights on digital music files. Meanwhile, an Australian company has built MP3 software for Windows CE devices.

In an effort to appease the recording industry and give artists more control over the distribution of their work, Diamond Multimedia plans to add a copyright protection system to upcoming versions of its portable Rio MP3 player.

Diamond will incorporate InterTrust Technologies' digital rights management (DRM) system, which encrypts MP3 files and gives artists an opportunity to dictate distribution and copying rights.
