AUDIO
In the heart of many guitar amplifiers, vacuum tubes still burn bright, giving the rich tones that most musicians claim can't be coaxed from the solid-state transistors that replaced most tubes 35 years ago. But Eric Pritchard of Déjà Vu Audio believes he has finally made a successful translation from tubes to transistors. His latest tube emulator can control distortion at any volume. With a waning demand for tubes, musicians will have to rely on Pritchard's emulators. "Tubes are made in only a few factories," says Harry Kolbe of Soundsmith, which builds and repairs tube amplifiers. "When those factories shut down, tube amps will be gone."
