Capercod Colie (above) is one of the dozens of space jockeys and storyboard scenes that Combustion Studios's Ty Ruben Ellingson and D. J. Marini are creating for the K Project, a Tokyo amusement park, hotel, and resort scheduled to open in 2002. Financed by Takeo Shigemitsu, the wealthy chair of Lotte Ltd., K Project plans to go head-to-head with Tokyo Disneyland. But while the Magic Kingdom has generations of characters to populate its parks and hawk as souvenirs, K Project began with none - a theme park without a theme.

Enter Ellingson and Marini. The characters created by the Hollywood monster maker and the Lucasfilm alum will come to life not only as park attractions, but as comic book heroes, action figures, and even movie stars. Disneyland, you might say, in reverse.
