Just when you thought electronic music was doomed to MTV party-to-go samplers, along comes Operation Re-Information. ORI bills itself as "an information-control organization dedicated to providing technical solutions for today's informational difficulties." In CTRL, this nerd-pop supergroup has reinvented the next generation of electronica.

During live performances, ORI uses PowerBooks with software developed in its research lab to trigger real-time audio samples via guitar-strapped computer keyboards, thereby eliminating the generic vibe typical of the genre.

At a recent "lecture," the team stunned the crowd with its full-metal assault of ICD (Information Control Dynamics) technology. In standouts "Oh No, the Horse!" (a "Call to the Post" sample repeated ad nauseam until the ultrafamiliar loses all context) and "Country Love Song" (a loop of prosaic Nashville riffs and tragic twang), ORI proves that, through science, it is possible to turn the mundane into the ultramundane.

From ORI's Webstation, you can purchase a Re-os Pistol multioscillator sound device, download RevoSoundPlayer 0.3, or browse research documents. Truly the ultimate in audio geek chic.
