Do cartoon characters possess carnal knowledge? The stars of the shorts featured in Sextoons: An Erotic Animation Festival certainly don't believe in monastic celibacy. Ranging from the roaring '20s to the swinging '70s, these naughty and often artistic cartoons take the joy of sex to new heights and depths.
Surprisingly, the most graphic and vulgar offerings of the group are two silent-era selections: the infamous 1924 Buried Treasure, with the overendowed Eveready Harton finding his way into willing women, a very surprised man (one of the first gay sex scenes put on film), and some jolly barnyard critters; and Out of Order, a surreal parade of sight gags with disturbing punch lines. Also worth noting are The Further Adventures of Super Screw, in which the hero encounters a randy gorilla in a hospital, and a bizarre Scandinavian spoof of Snow White in which the celebrated heroine forsakes purity for exhibitionism and the Seven Dwarfs do a lot more than sing "Heigh-Ho!" The latter film's scratchy and grainy color suggests a bootleg print smuggled in during the good-old-bad-days of bluenosed smut-sniffing customs officers.
However, Sextoons goes beyond the lewd, rude locker-room mind-set to include some very clever and worthwhile feats of animation. Two films, the doll romp Jack in the Box and the Claymation-style Little Genitalia, use stop action animation with extraordinary maturity, both in content and execution, while the abstract free-flow imagery of Hearts and Arrows and Armchair Inventions fills the screen with droll visions of a more cerebral and sensual nature. Do You Like Boobs a Lot?, featuring a sing-along ditty offered with a photo montage of Bettie Page wannabes, is so cheery that no one could take offense.
Sextoons runs the gamut from the sophisticated to the sophomoric. Whether you like it cool or crass, this video caters to all tastes.
