InterNIC-AlterNIC Dispute Settled

Eugene Kashpureff, the name-space bad boy who goofed with the domain registry, says he's reached a deal in Network Solutions' suit against him.

Eugene Kashpureff, who twice last month rerouted service from Network Solutions' InterNIC domain registry to his AlterNIC server, said Tuesday that he's reached an out-of-court settlement of a federal suit the company had brought against him.

In an email, Kashpureff said he was "very happy" with the terms of settlement, under which he agreed to write a public apology to Network Solutions and the Internet community, which he posted to his email list, NewDom, on Saturday. Kashpureff also promised not to disrupt InterNIC again and to work with the company to make sure his antics cannot be duplicated by others.

The company would not confirm details of the settlement, pending a judge's review of the deal later this week. Until then, spokesman Chris Clough said, the agreement cannot be considered final.

Network Solutions holds an exclusive agreement with the National Science Foundation through March 1998 as registrar of the generic top-level domains .com, .net, .org, and .gov. Kashpureff is one of a host of would-be registrars seeking to expand the name space and open it up to new registry services.
