Loompanics Unlimited prides itself on publishing and selling the world's most controversial books. Many are how-to guides for illegal activity, like Disruptive Terrorism ($12.95) and How to Steal Food from the Supermarket (US$10). Started in 1975 by Michael Hoy, an accountant in a Michigan boat factory at the time, Loompanics began with one book: an index to National Lampoon. Although it didn't sell well, Hoy decided to put together a listing of his favorite books. Later, he went into publishing full time.
The list includes the popular Secrets of Methamphetamine Manufacture ($24.95), which has been updated by readers - many of whom are now in federal custody. "I liked presenting a variety of outrageous and controversial viewpoints," says Hoy. Indeed.
