Despite all the pricey gizmos that adorn certain pages of your favorite magazine (we're assuming that this is your favorite magazine), the Wired staff knows all too well that luxury works on a sliding-scale. So for those of us who don't have any 10K afternoons in our immediate futures, we present the $10 afternoon.
First off, if it's a nice day put down this magazine, get on your bicycle (we're assuming you have a bicycle) and ride somewhere. Take an ice cream break ($1.50). Pedal to a movie theater and see a film ($4 to $7). Buy a soda ($1.25 to 2.00) and sneak into a second movie in the same theater.
No bicycle? Boot up your computer (we're assuming you have a computer) and log onto America Online (a bargain at $3.50 per hour). Choose a suggestive screen name like "HotPants," pop into a "room" in the "People Connection" area and bait the legions of sexually frustrated teenage boys who will undoubtedly come on to you. When you tire of this sport, check out the online version of the San Jose Mercury News or explore some of the many forums (everything from "Bull Moose Tavern" to "Scuba Club" is on here). Download a shareware game from the software library, log-off and spend the rest of the afternoon playing.
All it'll cost you is the utility bill.
